The Gran Paradiso, entirely on Valle d’Aosta territory, is the highest peak of the only mountain massif culminating at over 4000 metres entirely on Italian territory. The ascent to the ‘Granpa’ is a classic of easy summer mountaineering and spring ski mountaineering: in the huts that form the starting point (Federico Chabod and Vittorio Emanuele II) you will find mountaineers from all over Europe, and beyond. The ascent to the Refuges is a nature trail experience: chamois, ibex, marmots, alpine flora.

Various itineraries traverse its walls: we propose the normal route from Rif. Vittorio Emanuele, a classic high mountain route. The first ascent was made on 4 September 1860. If places are not available, ascent from Rif. Chabod.

The ascent to Gran Paradiso is in great demand and very popular: it is necessary to book in advance for the availability of places in the mountain huts.

Programme
Day 1
Meeting to be arranged (Valsavaranche) depending on availability at the mountain huts (Chabod 2750 m, or Vittorio Emanuele II, 2735 m). Briefing, backpack check. Ascent on path. Approx. 2.5 hrs. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2
Wake up early (generally at 04:00) breakfast and departure, a first stony moraine by the light of the headlamps and then we tie up on the glacier which with a regular ascent takes us to the base of the last, steep snowy slope and then to the final ridge, which we will tackle in complete safety. Approx. 5h ascent. Return to the mountain hut, stop to tidy up the rucksacks, rest and descend to the cars: a full day, 10 – 12h walk.
Good to know:
Difficulty and commitment: medium- high. Consider that the hike takes place at high altitude.
Technical equipment: rucksack, mountain boots, harness, snap hook, webbing, helmet, crampons, telescopic poles, headlamp.
High-mountain clothing: mountaineering trousers, gore-tex jacket (windproof and waterproof), technical underwear, gloves, cap, sunglasses, sun cream.

Important notes:
Accommodation in hut with half board service, bring sleeping bag for the hut.
Safety equipment (harness, helmet, ice axe and crampons) can be provided free of charge to participants (to be agreed with Alpine Guide) or rented at Refuge (booking needed).

Before departure, the mountain guide contacts all participants for useful information about the trip and the necessary equipment.
The programme may be subject to change at the sole discretion of the mountain guide depending on weather conditions and the technical level of the participants.
In the event of changes to the programme, for reasons beyond the mountain guide’s control, any additional costs will be divided between the participants.

BOOKING POLICY AND PENALTIES:
Payments: 30% deposit on booking, balance 20 days before departure date.
– Bookable on free days, subject to reaching the number of participants and availability of places at the Refuge. Closing date for bookings and confirmation 20 days before the requested date.
– In the event of cancellation due to adverse weather conditions or force majeure, the entire participation fee will be refunded.
– Penalty: 100% of the participation fee for cancellations from 20 days to departure.
