Cervinia to Zermatt
2023

January – March 2023

From Cervinia to Zermatt crossing through “Porta Nera”

One-day unforgettable ski mountaineering and free ride experience in the hearth of Monte Rosa Alps, with unique view on Matterhorn. The descent through “Porta Nera” is a classic free-ride descent, connecting Cervinia to Zermatt, in a severe environment, surrounded by the seracs and crevasses of the Schwarztor Glacier, requiring good physical preparation and mastery of off-piste descent technique.

You can book individually or for a private group (maximum 6 people) with minimum notice, to offer the best possibility of evaluating weather and snow conditions. Route normally very popular, ideal period from January to mid-April, depending on snow conditions.
Recommended on weekdays to avoid crowding and fully enjoy the experience.
Possibility of overnight stay, the night before, at Rifugio delle Guide hut, in Plateau Rosà (3480m), to live a full mountain experience. Or in Cervinia or Valtournanche, to indulge in the pleasure of a relaxing afternoon.

Program

8:30 am meeting in Cervinia (at the cable car departure station to Plateau Rosà).

After safety briefing and material check, we ascent to Plateau Rosà. Short descent on the Swiss side, following Zermatt resort area slopes, and ascent to Klein Matterhorn. From here, we follow a long crossing, and with slight ascent we reach Porta Nera pass (3734m), between Mount Pollux and Roccia Nera (about 1h 30min).
From Porta Nera, the thrilling and wonderful descent on the beautiful slopes between seracs and crevasses of the Schwarztor Glacier, brings us down to join Gorner Glacier, which ends with a narrow and characteristic passage between rocks and a stream, normally frozen in winter. At the exit of the canyon a short descent and we reach Furi, a small village above Zermatt. The cable-car  will take us back to Klein Matterhorn.  The long descent to Cervinia will complete our day, with a total of 1900 meters of descent.
